How to Write a Tech Pack That Factories Can Work With

What goes into a tech pack factories can actually work with: sketches, measurements with tolerances, materials, stitch details - and what we do when yours is thin.

Ask any sample room what slows them down and the answer is rarely sewing speed - it is guessing. Every missing measurement, every 'same as the photo' note, every unspecified trim becomes a decision somebody has to make twice: once in the sample, again in bulk. A good tech pack removes the guessing, and writing one is easier than most brands fear.

The five sections that matter

Flat sketches first: front and back line drawings with callouts pointing at every detail - collar style, pocket type, zip length. Then the measurement chart, one column per size, taken from points a factory can actually find: high shoulder point, chest at armpit line, sleeve length from shoulder. Materials next: fabric composition and weight in gsm, every trim with a code or a photo. Stitch and seam notes for the areas that matter - collar, cuffs, any stress point. And labels plus packing: what goes on the neck, the care label, the hangtag, the polybag.

The tolerance column saves arguments

A measurement without a tolerance is a promise nobody can keep. Fabric moves, cutters breathe, needles drift a millimetre. Write plus-or-minus on every measurement - half a centimetre on most points is normal - and suddenly inspection has a rule instead of an opinion. This single column prevents more disputes than any other line in the pack.

Photos help, but do not replace numbers

A reference shirt is useful - send it, or send photos. But factories cannot measure a mood board. If you have a sample you love, send it as the fit reference and tell us which points to copy; we will measure it and put the numbers into the chart for you to approve.

What we do when a pack is thin

Plenty of clients arrive with sketches and an idea. That is workable: our sampling team turns whatever exists - tech pack, reference garment, or good photos - into a complete internal spec before cutting, and confirms it with you before the first stitch. Samples take 3-7 days once inputs are confirmed, which is exactly why we confirm everything first.
Send us whatever you have - a full pack, a sketch, or a photo of a shirt you like. Email XinChengDa Garments at info@xcdgarments.com or message us on WhatsApp, and we will tell you what is missing before sampling starts.
