OEM vs ODM vs CMT: Which Cooperation Model Fits Your Brand

CMT, OEM and ODM decide who designs, who sources and who carries the risk - a practical comparison from a Shenzhen factory that works in all three.

Three abbreviations decide who designs the garment, who buys the fabric, and who carries the risk when a style flops. Buyers throw the words around loosely, so here is what each model actually means at the factory floor level - and how to pick.

CMT: you bring everything

Cut, Make, Trim. You supply patterns, fabric and trims; the factory cuts, sews and finishes, charging mainly for labour. You get maximum control and the clearest cost breakdown - and you also carry sourcing, inventory and every mistake in the fabric order. CMT suits brands with their own technical team and established suppliers.

OEM: you design, we execute

You bring the design - a tech pack, a reference sample, sometimes just a sketch - and the factory sources materials, develops samples and runs production. This is our main model. The factory takes responsibility for turning the design into a working garment; you keep the design ownership and the brand. Most labels you see in stores are OEM products.

ODM: start from the factory's blocks

The factory already has developed styles, fits and blocks; you select, adjust colours and trims, add your label, and go. Fastest route to market with the lowest technical requirement - and the trade-off is that the base design is not exclusive to you. ODM suits testing a category or filling a line quickly.

How to choose

Honest questions: do you have design resources? Then OEM. Need speed and low technical input? ODM. Already have patterns and fabric sources? CMT. Many brands mix them - one OEM hero product, ODM basics around it. Within our own range, a utility shirt dress starts from a tech pack while a knit midi can be adapted to your colours either way: same factory, two different levels of involvement.
