12 Sewing Techniques in Garment Manufacturing: A Buyer's Guide

You don't need to be a seamstress to judge a garment factory. Learn twelve stitch types, turn any garment inside out, and you can tell in two minutes whether the maker knew what they were doing.
The twelve, briefly
Plain seam - the everyday joint. T-shirt sides, dress panels.
Overlock - thread wrapping the raw edge so knits can't fray.
Coverstitch - parallel lines, flat stretchy hems. T-shirts, activewear.
Chain stitch - stretchy and strong. Jeans crotches, waistbands.
Zigzag - sideways stretch. Elastic, lingerie.
Blind hem - nearly invisible. Trouser and dress hems.
Pick stitch - fake hand sewing. Suit lapels.
Topstitching - the visible line. Denim, pockets.
Bar tack - dense reinforcement at stress points. Pocket corners, zippers, belt loops.
Buttonhole + buttons - sealed slits; cross-sewn buttons with a wound shank.
Flat-felled seam - raw edges folded inside. Jeans inseams. Nothing to fray.
The two-minute check
Inside out. Then: straight lines? Even density (8-10 stitches per inch on shirting)? Right stitch for the fabric? Bar tacks at every stress point? Buttons survive a firm twist? Inside as tidy as the outside? Discipline inside is discipline everywhere.
